The Trojans Explosive Playmaker Poses A Unique Challenge

LSU Football: How Will Brian Kelly Slow Down USC's Zachariah Branch?

The Trojans' Explosive Playmaker Poses a Unique Challenge

When LSU travels to Los Angeles to face USC on September 4, one of the biggest challenges the Tigers' defense will face is containing Trojans wide receiver Zachariah Branch. The 6-foot, 190-pound sophomore is one of the most explosive playmakers in the country, and he has the potential to take over a game at any moment.

Branch's Strengths

  • Exceptional speed and quickness
  • Elusive in the open field
  • Strong hands and excellent body control
  • Dangerous after the catch

In his freshman season, Branch caught 55 passes for 819 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns. His performance earned him Freshman All-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America.

How LSU Can Stop Branch

LSU defensive coordinator Matt House will have his hands full trying to develop a game plan to slow down Branch. Here are a few things the Tigers could do:

  1. Double-team Branch with a cornerback and a safety. This will limit his opportunities to get open deep.
  2. Jam Branch at the line of scrimmage to disrupt his timing and prevent him from getting a clean release.
  3. Spy Branch with a linebacker or safety to keep an eye on him at all times.
  4. Force USC quarterback Caleb Williams to hold onto the ball longer by pressuring him.

It will be interesting to see how House and the LSU defense approach the challenge of stopping Branch. If they can contain him, the Tigers will have a good chance of winning the game. But if Branch gets loose, he could be a major problem for LSU.
