Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson AO (born January 3, 1956) is an American actor, film director, and producer who made his acting debut on the Australian television drama series The Sullivans (1976-1983). He rose to fame as the star of the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon film series and later earned acclaim as the director of Braveheart (1995), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture.

Early Life and Career

Mel Gibson was born in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children. He moved to Australia with his family in 1968, where he attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. After graduating from NIDA, Gibson began his acting career on Australian television, appearing in several series before making his film debut in Summer City (1977).

Breakthrough Roles

Gibson's breakthrough role came in the 1979 post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max. He starred as Max Rockatansky, a lone warrior who roams the lawless Australian outback. The film was a huge commercial success, and it launched Gibson's career as an action hero.

In 1987, Gibson starred in the buddy cop action comedy film Lethal Weapon. He played Martin Riggs, a suicidal cop who teams up with LAPD veteran Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). The film was a critical and commercial success, and it spawned three sequels.

Directorial Career

In 1995, Gibson made his directorial debut with Braveheart, a historical epic about the Scottish rebel William Wallace. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning five Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture.

Gibson has since directed several other films, including The Passion of the Christ (2004), Apocalypto (2006), and Hacksaw Ridge (2016).

Personal Life

Mel Gibson has been married twice. He has seven children, including two with his current wife, Rosalind Ross.
